Always positive and enthusiastic about her work and community, Patience has worked in the program for seven years. In addition to her work as a skilled seamstress, she also runs a training program at the community center to teach others how to sew. She has come to stay in the Cape Town area in the hopes of building a better life for her family here and back in the Eastern Cape where the opportunities to earn are even less. Last year, when one of her family members in the Eastern Cape passed away, Patience didn't have the funds to travel to her family during their time of mourning. Through her work now with Spaza Store, she was able to finally fund a trip back to visit her family at the end of the year and spend precious time together. Patience has a message for Fair Trade Friday members: "God Bless you. You are putting food on my family's table. This work means so much to me."

The artisans who worked on these dish covers come from incredibly desperate situations, living in informal settlements with uncertainty about where money for food will come from each week. Because the opportunity for a regular and consistent income is quite rare in this community, consistent and committed work that provides a regular income is something the artisans are very proud of. With this dignified work, they no longer have the status of being unemployed. The job will be a stepping stone for many of them as they gain experience and responsibility. They take great pride in their workspace and performance. The flexible work schedule gives them time to focus on other things like children, home management, and education.

This order for Fair Trade Friday provided more than 190 hours of dignified work for 24 artisans.
